What is Microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is a cosmetic procedure that combines two techniques to improve the appearance and texture of the skin.

Here's how it works:

1. Microneedling: Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves the use of a device with fine needles that create tiny punctures in the skin's surface. These micro-injuries stimulate the skin's natural healing response, promoting the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. The controlled injury also helps to break down old scar tissue and stimulate cell turnover, leading to smoother, rejuvenated skin.

2. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): PRP is derived from the patient's own blood. A small amount of blood is drawn from the patient and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood components. Platelets contain growth factors and other proteins that are crucial for tissue repair and regeneration. PRP is rich in these growth factors and when applied to the skin, it can accelerate the healing process and enhance the results of microneedling.

During a microneedling with PRP procedure, the following steps typically occur:

1. Preparation: The patient's blood is drawn, usually from the arm, and placed in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma.

2. Microneedling: The skin is cleaned and a numbing cream may be applied to minimize discomfort. The microneedling device is then passed over the skin, creating controlled micro-injuries.

3. Application of PRP: After the microneedling is complete, the platelet-rich plasma is applied to the treated area of the skin. The tiny channels created by the microneedling allow for better absorption of the PRP into the deeper layers of the skin.

4. Recovery: Following the procedure, the skin may appear red and slightly swollen, similar to a mild sunburn. Patients typically experience some degree of downtime, I recommend taking 24 hours off from vigorous exercise or anything that can cause irritation to the skin.

Benefits of microneedling with PRP may include:

- Improved skin texture and tone

- Reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

- Diminished acne scars and other types of scarring

- Increased collagen production

- Enhanced skin rejuvenation and overall radiance

It's important to note that multiple sessions of microneedling with PRP may be required to achieve optimal results, and individual outcomes can vary based on factors such as skin type, age, and the specific concerns being addressed. I typically recommend 4 sessions to start, spaced one month apart.
